Once upon a time, leggings were considered sloppy. They meant you weren’t making an effort. They were as hideous and as shameful as sweatpants. But as leggings have become more popular on the runway, we’ve now got a hybrid style called Athleisure.
This is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as during work, trips to school, or other casual or social occasions.
Many are not impressed by the convenient trend. The process designer, Robyn Berkley, who also works as a brand consultant, has said that you do not see people in Paris walking around in their gym clothes-its not seen as appropriate. However, I came across an article the other day chronicling an English man’s day sporting ‘meggings’ (mens leggings).
As anti fashion and simplicity continue to gain popularity, people are taking a second look at how to use leggings in their wardrobe. Lets be honest, they are the most comfortable item in our closet. They fit into everyone’s life in one way or another, its just a matter of styling them right.
Leggings ae not created equally. It is all about fabric. Faux leather, knit, velvet, nylon and now even denim leggings. Fashionable leggings are good news, they elevate their workout cousin, allowing for endless weekend outings. Materials make leggings efficient. They are flattering and multi functional. Especially with runways going for seasonless looks, these pieces can prove great for any wardrobe. They can be thrown on with a coat to run out on the weekend or make an otherwise skimpy dress appropriate for a date. They can be worn with trending thigh and hip high slits, with oversize sweaters, leggings are more than just gym wear. And we can’t forget about sweatpants. Heathered or cuffed sweatpants mix well with boots or slides. Throw on a blazer and heels and we’ve got an instant casual cool look. Dresses can be worn even more often, just slip on a pair of sneakers for a sporty style. While fashion may be arguing against athleisure, the everyday woman has seen the appeal and gone full tilt for it.
If you love athleisure, just remember a few tips for good style.
1- Accessorize appropriately.
2- Mix pieces that are functional and fashionable, layers are the key to this trend, even if it just means throwing on a jacket.
3- There is a difference between workout leggings and casual ones. Fabric, fabric, fabric!
The idea that gym clothes are making their way out of the gym and becoming a larger part of people’s everyday wardrobes can be cool. Personally I love incorporating athleisure into my own style. Its a legitimate alternative about ease and relaxation. With seasonless fashion also becoming a popular way to dress, it allows for the best of all fashions.
